From the Author

This completely revised and updated second edition of my bestseller, Blood Sugar 101, is 40 pages longer than the previous edition. The new content includes sections that answer the most common questions readers have emailed me about since the first edition was published. In it you'll find discussions about new topics like what research has learned about dietary and surgical approaches to reversing diabetes that differ from the one we concentrate on. You'll also learn more about when to test, how to test, how to interpret you blood sugar test results, safe exercise strategies, and the use of insulin. Since many new drugs have come onto the market since the first edition was published, this new edition has a greatly expanded section on diabetes drugs, too. This is the first of a two book series, the "Blood Sugar 101 Library." The second volume is Your Diabetes Questions Answered, published in 2017. It amplifies and extends the information found in this blook using a more informal question and answer format.Â

Two months ago, my primary care office called with my blood test results and suggested I go straight to the emergency room. THAT was a wakeup call!My visit with the diabetes educator did not go well. I felt like the advice she was giving me didn't make sense and red flags were popping up all over the place. I decided to seek out information on my own.Luckily for me, I found that Jenny Ruhl had already done much of the hard work of digging deep into diabetes research to learn what works and what will kill you. Yep, the stuff the diabetes educator was telling me would have put me at risk had I followed her guidance.I've used the information that Jenny's compiled to make informed decisions for myself. My primary care physician was skeptical, but I've managed to cut my fasting blood sugar from nearly 350 to the 110-120 range and my A1C from 12.4 to 6.2 in only two months. His nurse told me she's never seen that kind of turnaround in such a short time.Jenny Ruhl's book got me started on the right path, and will be one I refer back to again and again. I'm looking forward to being one of her 5% Club very, very soon.

Why I love this book in a nutshell* You get the information you need to manage your blood sugar levels and are empowered to prevent the negative health consequences associated with high blood sugar levels* Complex scientific information is presented in plain language that you can understand* The author breaks down your body’s complex processes and makes it easy for you to understand what is going on* Research studies are dissected and the information contained is described in terms you can understand.* There are clear explanations regarding the serious health issues caused by fluctuating high blood sugar levels.Summary:What makes this book outstanding is the author’s ability to take very scientific information and break it down into the key components that people need to know and present it in a simple way that everyone can understand. Not only does the author do an outstanding job of describing why everyone should care about their blood sugar, but she also provides an easy to understand strategy whereby everyone can manage their own blood sugars and avoid all of the health problems associated with high blood sugars.Topics CoveredThe book starts of with a really good description of what normal blood sugar is and how normal people metabolize food. I’ve never seen a better description in plain language that you can understand.Next there is a great discussion regarding how diabetes develops in certain people over time. The author makes really interesting points and backs them up with research studies:* Your genetic heritage has a greater influence on if you will develop diabetes than what you eat* Most people have blood sugar issues that cause them to be fat rather than the other way around.Rather than propose a strict diet, the author gives you the information you need to determine what foods you should be eating and how much you should be eating.* What is normal blood sugar? - Presented in easy to understand language* How diabetes develops - Presented in easy to understand language and backed up by research studies.* What really causes diabetes? An outstanding description regarding what is known based on the latest research* Blood sugar level and organ damage - Using the latest information, the author lays out what organ damage is done by various blood sugar levels.* Must you deteriorate? Many doctors preach that organ damage and health issues are inevitable for diabetics. Here the author debunks this myth by explaining exactly what the research shows and the shortcoming in the research that have caused most doctors to prescribe medications but not encourage their patients to lower their blood sugar levels.* How to lower your blood sugar - A step by step guide that everyone can follow.* Making your diet work - Simple, practical tips* Diabetes drugs - How to tell if you can’t manage your blood sugar with diet alone. What to do if you can’t.* Insulin - A small percentage of people do not produce enough insulin. For those that don’t, here is the most effective way to use insulin.* Supplements and healing foods - Separating fact from fiction when it comes to natural alternatives to help you manage your blood sugar levels.* Exercise - A practical approach to exercise* Is it really type 2 diabetes? A discussion of the other forms of diabetes that most people are unaware of and require different management including Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA), Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY), and Insulin Sensitive Type 2 Diabetes,* Working with Doctors and Hospitals - How to arm yourself with a doctor who is a partner, not an obstacle including how to figure out whether your doctor is the right one based on knowledge levels, the tests he/she orders, medications he/she recommends. Basically, what to expect of a good doctor.Key Messages:The core message of the book is that blood sugar levels over 140 mg/dL are damaging. Regardless whether you have diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome, you want to keep your blood sugar levels under 140 mg/dL.Blood sugar levels over 140 mg/dl are the cause of many heath conditions like increased heart attack risk, nerve problems, loss of eyesight, circulation problems, problems with your blood vessels and damage to your pancreasThe best way to ensure your blood sugar levels never go over 140 is to reduce your consumption of simple carbohydrates (sugars and starches)The majority of people can control their blood sugars with diet alone. For those that can’t the author presents several great strategies for doing so using medications with the fewest side effects. You did not eat your way to diabetes! Not all diabetics are fat and often, it is insulin resistance that causes weight gain long before someone becomes diabetic, not the other way around.Blood sugar swings are a major cause of food cravings that lead to overeating and weight gain. You can be free from constant hunger if your manage your blood sugar levels.

Jenny Ruhl's approach to Diabetes is clear concise and evidenced based. It is written for the lay person but has information that could be useful to anyone who treats Diabetes also. It has helped me to maintain my Diabetes without complications or worsening since 2010, and it may be a book that will save my life in the end as the consequences of high blood sugars include organ damage and death. My sugars are well controlled, so much so that the endocrinologists and primary care doctors I have seen have trouble believing I have diabetes!! (Because they rely on the HgA1C and I keep mine in near normal range) I recommend this book to anyone I talk to about Diabetes, and I have bought it as a gift for several friends and most recently for a new doctor! I truly cannot say enough positive things about this book. Although I have never met Jenny Ruhl I feel I owe her a debt of gratitude personally for changing my life by teaching me how to prevent the consequences of high blood sugars from Diabetes. For this reason I feel good about any extra money I have spent on additional books for family, friends etc. If you or someone you know has Diabetes this book is a must! It is unlikely I would ever have met a nutritionist, diabetic educator, doctor or anyone who would have taught me all of this, and she teaches it so well. Without using her approach my sugars would never be as well controlled as they are and like most diabetics I would be assuming that I have to live with a progressive illness. Jenny Ruhl showed me that it does not have to be progressive!

I bought this book because of the reviews and my desire to get off the seesaw I've been on for over 10 years of A1Cs between 6.4 - 7.4, I didn't expect a big difference but was very pleasantly surprised.I started following some of the tips provided, and have dropped from 7.4 to 6.5 in 3 months to 5.8 in six months! I hadn't been below 6 in over 15 years. Jenny Ruhl's depth of research is remarkable and showed me where I was going wrong (often on doctor's advice) and what I could do to change it. Her extensive knowledge and citing of research studies backs up what she says. It's unfortunate that our doctors don't have the time or inclination to study diabetes more in depth but as Jenny says they have so many diseases to handle and we generally only have 1.I was so thoroughly impressed that I bought 3 more books for a friend and 2 sisters and picked up another of Jenny's books, Your Diabetes Questions Answered. That book is excellent as well!If you are having difficulty lowering your sugars, this book is for you.
